Electricity

In deregulated states (NSW, VIC, QLD, SA), you choose your electricity retailer. The cheapest approach is to compare plans at energy.gov.au (the government comparison site) or energywatch.com.au. Average monthly electricity cost for 2 housemates sharing: AUD $60–100/month total. Look for: fixed daily supply charge + per-kWh usage rate. Avoid "conditional discount" plans that have high base rates.

Gas

Not all rentals have gas — check before signing. If gas is connected, shop on the same comparison sites. Monthly cost for 2 housemates: AUD $30–80.

Internet (NBN)

Australia's NBN (National Broadband Network) is the fixed-line internet system. Most rentals are NBN-connected (check with the agent). Compare plans at whistleout.com.au. Recommended for students: 100Mbps plan, AUD $60–75/month. Providers: Aussie Broadband, Tangerine, Dodo. Avoid Telstra and Optus (expensive for equivalent speeds).

Splitting Bills

Use Splitwise or a shared notes spreadsheet. Assign one housemate as account holder for each utility, with others paying them their share monthly. Keep all accounts in the account holder's name to avoid complication if a housemate moves out.
