The Essentials List (Buy First)

  • Bedding: Pillow, duvet/quilt, fitted sheet, pillowcase. Kmart or Target (cheapest in Australia): ~AUD $60 for a full set.
  • Towels: 2 bath towels. Kmart: ~AUD $15.
  • Cutlery/plate/bowl/glass: Basic set from Kmart: ~AUD $20.
  • Pot and pan: Basic set: AUD $20–40 from Kmart.

What to Get for Free

  • Facebook Marketplace: Furniture (desks, bookshelves, chairs, wardrobes) listed free or AUD $5–20. "Free items" category in your suburb regularly lists functional furniture from people moving house.
  • Gumtree Free Section: Similar to Facebook Marketplace. Larger bulky items need transport — borrow a ute (utility truck) from Bunnings for $49/hour if needed.
  • Kerbside collection: Most Australian councils have a hard-rubbish collection period (twice a year). Residents leave bulky items on the kerb. Check your council's dates.

Kmart: Your Best Friend

Kmart is the ultra-affordable department store chain where Australians (and international students) outfit their first homes. Quality is basic but functional. Home section has everything needed for AUD $200–300 total if bought carefully.
