Tests Accepted by Australian Universities and Visas

  • IELTS Academic: Most universally accepted. Gold standard for Australian immigration and university admission.
  • PTE Academic (Pearson): Fully computer-graded (no examiner bias). Results within 24–48 hours. Accepted by all Australian universities and for all visa subclasses.
  • TOEFL iBT: Widely accepted by universities, but NOT yet accepted by all Australian visa types (check Home Affairs guidelines). Some universities require minimum of 94 total (which can be harder to achieve).
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency: Accepted by most Australian universities. Results take longer. Less commonly used in Australia context.

Which Is Easier for Nepali Students?

  • PTE Academic: Computer-graded — no examiner subjectivity. Speaking is assessed by AI. For students who find conversational English confidence difficult (speaking nervousness), PTE often produces higher speaking scores. Faster results. Recommended for most Nepali students.
  • IELTS: Human examiner for speaking. If you are confident and articulate in spoken English, IELTS may suit you better. The writing assessment is somewhat more predictable with practice.

Test Score Requirements

Most Australian universities: IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall (no band below 6.0). Student visa: IELTS 5.5 overall. Skilled migration PR (proficient): IELTS 7.0 each band. Skilled migration (superior): IELTS 8.0 each band.
