Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Regulations
Nepal allows foreign currency remittance for education purposes up to the amount specified in your university's fee letter, plus living allowance as per country-specific rates. You must go through a licensed bank with supporting documents (CoE, university fee invoice, visa).
How to Remit Officially
- Get a recommendation letter from your university (fee invoice, cost estimate)
- Visit your bank with: passport, visa, CoE, fee invoice, TT (Telegraphic Transfer) application form
- Bank submits for NRB approval (usually 3–7 working days)
- Funds sent via SWIFT to your Australian bank account
Exchange Rate Comparison
Bank SWIFT transfers typically offer worse exchange rates than specialist services. Wise (formerly TransferWise) offers bank-to-bank transfers with mid-market rates and transparent fees — often 2–4% better than bank rates on AUD transfers.
Practical Strategy
Bring enough liquidity for your first 2–3 months via your own Australian bank account (opened before arrival with some banks like CommBank or ANZ Welcome Account for international students). Arrange recurring NRB-approved transfers for tuition payments.
