Using Your Nepali License in Australia
You can drive in Australia using your Nepali (foreign) driving licence and an official English translation. The translation must be from an authorised provider (NAATI-accredited translators, or the Automobile Association in your home country). This is valid for 3 months after you arrive in the state as a resident.
Converting to an Australian License
After 3 months, you must apply for an Australian licence. Process varies by state:
- NSW (Service NSW): Provide your Nepali licence + translation + identity proof + residency proof. Complete a knowledge test. May be exempt from practical test if your Nepali licence is from a comparable standard country — CHECK with Service NSW, as Nepal's assessment changes.
- VIC (VicRoads): Similar knowledge test requirement. Nepal licence holders are generally required to do a hazard perception test.
Should You Own a Car?
For most students in Sydney or Melbourne — no. Parking costs AUD 20–40/day in the CBD, traffic is heavy, and public transport is adequate. In Adelaide, Brisbane, or regional areas — a second-hand car (AUD 3,000–6,000) can be worth it, especially for getting to work shifts at night.
