Start Early — Very Early

Australian graduate programs open applications 12–18 months before the start date. Big-four consulting and accounting firms (Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, EY), government graduate programs, and large corporations recruit final-year students in February-May for positions starting the following February. If you're in your final year and haven't applied by June, you've missed most of the formal graduate program cycle.

What Australian Graduate Employers Look For

  • Australian work experience (even 6 months part-time in a relevant role transforms your application)
  • Internships completed during study (apply for Summer/Winter internship programs in Year 2)
  • Demonstrated engagement with your field (competition wins, research, projects)
  • Strong communication in English (interviews assess this directly)

The International Student Difficulty

Many graduate employers prioritise candidates who can work full-time immediately. With a student visa, your work hour restrictions end once you graduate (you can work unlimited hours in the 60 days after your course end date). Apply for a Graduate visa (subclass 485) as soon as possible — this grants 2–4 years of unrestricted work rights.
