Two Types of Claims
Direct billing: Your doctor/hospital submits the claim directly to OSHC. You pay nothing (or just the gap). This is the easiest method — ask the practice "do you direct bill OSHC?" when booking.
Manual claims: You pay the full fee upfront, then submit a claim to your OSHC provider to receive reimbursement. This is necessary when using a non-participating provider.
Manual Claim: Step by Step
- Keep your itemised receipt (must show: provider details, date, service items, amount charged)
- Log into your OSHC provider's app or website
- Navigate to "submit a claim" or "make a claim"
- Upload a photo of your receipt and complete the form
- Reimbursement is typically processed within 2–5 business days to your bank account
Provider-Specific Apps
- Medibank: Medibank app — in-app claims, real-time status tracking
- Bupa: Bupa HI app — same-day claim via app
- nib: nib OSHC app — photo upload claims
What to Keep
Keep all medical receipts until end of financial year. Some OSHC policies have annual claim limits — knowing your usage helps you plan whether to claim smaller amounts or save for larger expenses.
