Prescription vs Over-the-Counter

In Australia, many medications that are freely available over-the-counter in Nepal (antibiotics, certain painkillers, anti-anxiety medications) require a GP prescription. You cannot walk into a pharmacy and ask for antibiotics — the pharmacist will decline without a prescription.

The PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme)

Australia subsidises medications through the PBS. As an international student, you may or may not be entitled to PBS pricing depending on your OSHC policy and visa status. PBS pricing is significantly lower than private pricing.

  • PBS concession price: ~AUD $7.30 (low-income)
  • PBS standard price: ~AUD $31.60 maximum
  • Private (non-PBS) price: varies, can be AUD $50–200+

Chemist Warehouse: Your Budget Pharmacy

For non-prescription items (vitamins, pain relief, cold and flu products), Chemist Warehouse consistently offers lowest prices in Australia — 30–50% below Priceline and other pharmacy chains.

OSHC and Medications

OSHC covers certain medications at PBS rates. Your OSHC provider will have a list of covered medications — show your OSHC card at the pharmacy when presenting a prescription.
