Task 2 Overview

IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 asks you to write an essay in response to an argument, viewpoint, or problem. You have approximately 40 minutes (of your 60-minute writing test) and should write at least 250 words.

Essay Types

  • Opinion (Do you agree or disagree?): 40% of tasks
  • Discussion (Discuss both views + your opinion): 30%
  • Problem/Solution: 15%
  • Advantage/Disadvantage: 15%

High-Band Structure (Opinion Essay)

  1. Introduction (2–3 sentences): Paraphrase the question → state your position clearly
  2. Body Paragraph 1 (main reason for your view): Topic sentence → explanation → example → analysis
  3. Body Paragraph 2 (second reason): Same structure
  4. Concession paragraph (optional but raises band): Acknowledge opposing argument → refute it
  5. Conclusion (2 sentences): Restate position + summary

Vocabulary Strategies

  • Never repeat the exact words from the question — paraphrase
  • Use linking words accurately: "Furthermore", "Nevertheless", "This suggests that", "Consequently"
  • Avoid vague pronouns — "it" "they" "things" — be specific
  • Learn 10 topic-specific vocabulary sets: environment, technology, education, globalisation, health, work, media, government, crime, family
