Citizenship Requirements
- Be a permanent resident for at least 12 months prior to applying
- Have lived in Australia for at least 4 years (including time on temporary visas)
- Be of good character (no serious criminal history)
- Pass the Australian citizenship test (20 multiple choice questions on Australian values, history, and government)
- Attend a citizenship ceremony
What Citizenship Gives You
- Australian passport (one of the most powerful travel documents β visa-free access to 185 countries)
- Right to vote
- Access to all government benefits without restriction
- No more visa conditions or renewal requirements
- Nepal does not recognise dual citizenship β acquiring Australian citizenship means relinquishing Nepali citizenship under Nepali law
Nepal and Dual Citizenship
This is a significant personal decision. Nepal currently does not permit dual citizenship. Acquiring Australian citizenship means formally renouncing your Nepali citizenship. Many Nepali-Australians maintain an OCI-equivalent connection through the Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) framework β this gives travel and investment rights but is not citizenship.
