What Is SkillSelect?
SkillSelect is the Australian government's online system for managing applications for skilled migration visas. You submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) detailing your skills, qualifications, and points. The Department of Home Affairs then invites candidates from the pool at regular intervals (monthly for most visa types).
Step-by-Step EOI Submission
- Create an account at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au (SkillSelect section)
- Select your intended visa subclass (189 for independent, 190 for state nomination, 491 for regional)
- Enter your personal details, qualifications, work experience, English test scores, and skills assessment outcome
- Calculate your points (the system does this automatically but verify manually)
- Submit the EOI
After Submission
Your EOI sits in the pool. When a monthly invitation round occurs, the highest-scoring EOIs receive invitations. If invited, you have 60 days to submit the full visa application. If not invited this round, your EOI remains active for 24 months and you can update it if your circumstances improve (e.g., after receiving state nomination or improving English score).
Check Invitation Rounds
The Home Affairs website publishes outcomes of each invitation round (how many invited, minimum score for each visa type). Check these to understand your realistic prospects.
