What Is State Nomination?

Australian states and territories can nominate skilled migrants to fill specific workforce needs. Being nominated adds points to your SkillSelect score and in some cases provides a direct pathway to PR.

Subclass 190 β€” State Nominated PR

A direct permanent residence visa. State nominates you, you apply for 190, and if approved you receive permanent residency (with obligation to live in the nominating state for 2 years). Adds 5 points to SkillSelect score (but you don't go through the pool if directly invited by state).

Subclass 491 β€” Regional Provisional

A temporary visa (5 years) requiring you to live and work in a designated regional area. After 3 years on 491, you can apply for Subclass 191 (permanent regional visa). Adds 15 points to SkillSelect for state-nominated version.

Which States Are More Accessible?

  • South Australia: Historically more accessible for IT and healthcare occupations. Low minimum EOI points required compared to VIC/NSW.
  • Tasmania: Very proactive in attracting skilled migrants. Lower competition than mainland states.
  • Western Australia: Strong demand for engineers and healthcare professionals.
  • Victoria and NSW: Highest competition, typically require very high points scores.

How to Apply

Apply directly through the state government's skilled migration website. Each state has its own application form, occupation list, and assessment criteria. Most states open and close applications on a schedule β€” check regularly.
