The Real Numbers

At Australia's minimum wage of AUD 24.10/hour (2024–25), 48 hours per fortnight = ~AUD 1,157/fortnight pre-tax = approximately AUD 26,000/year. Average living costs are AUD 22,000–28,000/year. So work rights can realistically cover most of your living costs — but not tuition.

First 3 Months: What's Realistic?

Most international students take 6–12 weeks to find their first job. Arrive with at least 3 months' living costs saved. Don't rely on work income from day one.

Most Accessible Jobs for New Arrivals

  • Nepali/Indian restaurants: Language barrier isn't an issue. Many Nepali restaurant owners actively hire Nepali students.
  • Supermarket shelf stacking: Coles, Woolworths, Aldi. Night and weekend shifts available.
  • Cleaning and hospitality: Hotels, event centres, corporate cleaning companies.
  • Uber Eats / DoorDash / Menulog: Flexible hours. Need a bicycle or car. Pay is per delivery.

Getting a Tax File Number (TFN)

Apply for your TFN online at ato.gov.au within your first week in Australia. Without a TFN, your employer withholds the highest tax rate (47%) from your pay.

Fair Work Rights

Regardless of your visa status, you are protected by Australian Fair Work law. Minimum wage applies. You cannot be paid less than AUD 24.10/hour for non-casual work. Report wage theft at fairwork.gov.au.
