First WeekChecklistArrivalSetup Guide

Day 1 — Arrival

  • Clear customs and immigration (have your visa grant email ready)
  • Collect your temporary accommodation key (book at least 1 week of temporary accommodation before arrival — don't rely on finding a permanent place immediately)
  • Buy a local SIM card (7-Eleven, Woolworths, or Aldi)
  • Contact your family to confirm safe arrival

Day 2-3 — Admin Setup

  • Activate your Australian bank account (or visit branch to collect card)
  • Apply for Tax File Number (TFN) at ato.gov.au — takes 5–10 business days to arrive
  • Orient yourself: find the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, and train/bus stop

Day 4-5 — University

  • Visit your university's International Student Office — introduce yourself, get orientation schedule
  • Set up your university email and student portal
  • Find the library, computer labs, and student support services

Day 6-7 — Housing & Community

  • Start searching for a permanent share house if needed
  • Find the local Nepali student community (Facebook group, Nepali Student Association)
  • Buy a Myki/Opal/Go card and activate concession if eligible
