What Is Deferral?

Deferral means postponing the start of your enrolled course by one or two semesters. If you received a February offer but need to go in July, you request a deferral from the university's student administration office.

Is Deferral Always Possible?

Most universities allow one deferral of up to 12 months. However, some courses (especially competitive ones like medicine, dentistry, or capped programs) do not allow deferral. Always check the offer letter's deferral clause.

Visa Implications of Deferral

If you already applied for a visa with the original CoE, you must get a new CoE with the new start date and inform the Department. Your visa application can be updated but may need to be re-assessed depending on timing.

Important: Don't Defer Too Many Times

Multiple deferrals raise GTE concerns. It suggests your genuine intent to study is in question. One deferral is generally fine with a valid reason (medical, family, financial). Be careful about using deferral as a delay tactic.

Financial Impact

Your acceptance/enrollment fee is typically credited toward the deferred semester. However, if your offer expires and requires a fresh application, you may need to re-pay. Get everything in writing from the university.
