Master's by Coursework (MBC)

This is the standard postgraduate program most Nepali students pursue. You attend taught courses, complete assignments, sit exams, and may do a capstone project or internship. Duration: 1.5–2 years. Straightforward entry from a relevant bachelor's degree.

Master's by Research (MBR)

You conduct original research under the supervision of a professor, culminating in a 40,000–60,000 word thesis. Duration: 1.5–2 years. Often confused with a PhD — the difference is scope and length. No coursework, full research immersion.

Which Leads to Better PR Outcomes?

Both qualify for the Temporary Graduate visa (485). The key difference: MBR qualifies for two years on the 485 (same as coursework), but if you proceed to a PhD, the 485 duration extends to four years after PhD completion.

Funding Difference

MBR students can apply for the Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship — a full fee remission + living stipend (~AUD 32,000/year). MBC students are not eligible for RTP. This is a massive financial advantage of the research pathway.

Which Should You Choose?

If you want to work in industry → MBC. If you want to stay in academia, pursue a PhD, or want RTP funding → MBR.
