Step 1: Find a Matching Supervisor First

Unlike coursework programs, PhD admission in Australia is supervisor-dependent. Browse university research profiles, find academics whose recent publications (2022–2025) align with your research interests, and email them directly.

How to Email a Potential Supervisor

Keep it under 300 words: introduce yourself, cite 1–2 of their specific papers and explain why you found them compelling, briefly describe your proposed research idea, and ask if they are taking HDR students for 2025. Attach your CV and transcripts.

Research Proposal

Once a supervisor expresses interest, you'll need a 1,000–3,000 word research proposal. This should cover: research problem, why it matters, existing literature gap, methodology, and expected contribution.

RTP Scholarship

The Research Training Program scholarship provides: full tuition fee offset + living stipend (AUD 32,500/year in 2025) + relocation allowance. You apply for RTP as part of your PhD application — it is competitive, mostly merit-based.

Who Qualifies?

First-class honours or equivalent (75%+ in a 4-year bachelor's or master's with research component). A strong research publication or conference paper significantly boosts your RTP application.
